WasteMatters aims to provide practical aid to charities and schools that work with underserved communities of Hyderabad within the domain of solid waste management. The project’s mission is to reduce the barriers suffered by said organization in gaining access to efficient and sustainable methods of waste management. Towards this goal, the project has outlined a step-by-step approach that focuses on building the infrastructure to support the target organizations, while also educating local communities on how they can participate in waste management processes within their own spaces.
The project is in the process of releasing thoroughly researched articles that highlight the problems with waste disposal as it is practiced in the Global South, across both domestic and industrial spaces. The articles also raise awareness about local-level waste management initiatives that have been effective in various countries. Along with this, and especially for the younger generation, the project will be releasing a comprehensive activity book that explains the processes involved in composting and how young students can prepare a compost at home for all their domestic wet waste. These young students would also have the opportunity to interact with environmental activists, experts, scientists, and government officials to gain a deeper understanding of the problem of waste mismanagement and how the younger generation can play a crucial role in addressing it.
On the other hand, the project will launch a fundraising campaign to procure funds to help schools and charities continue their ongoing work of managing waste. Additionally, the funds would be used to process the collected waste into reusable materials for community members associated with the target organizations. A crucial aspect of the project would also be to install a waste processing infrastructure that would enable the targeted schools and organizations to become self-reliant in transforming collected waste from localities into reusable materials for underserved families and students.
